As I left my middle school friends and teachers behind, I felt very intimidated and anxious about the idea of starting high school. From the very beginning, Discovery accepted me with open arms. I’ve formed so many important relationships with friends and staff at this amazing school. Discovery has turned into a second family. All the staff at this school try their best to support their students in whatever way they can. I am grateful for all of the guidance and support I have received here, and I will continue to carry all the lessons I have learned here for the rest of my life.

Discovery High School: Where Fun Meets Learning

Hi, I'm Jezymae Yanong, a freshman at Discovery High School. What I love most about Discovery is the amazing sense of community and the endless opportunities to explore my interests.

Being a huge fan of games, joining the Discovery High Game Club was a no-brainer!  It's a blast getting together with friends, playing board games, and learning new strategies. It's not just about fun though, the club has also helped me develop my critical 

thinking and problem-solving skills.

Discovery High School goes way beyond textbooks. They offer tons of fun after-school events, which is something I really look forward to. From themed nights like henna and gingerbread decorating to movie nights and game nights, there's always something exciting happening. These events are a great way to unwind after school, meet new people, and celebrate different cultures.

But the fun doesn't stop there! Discovery also organizes amazing after-school trips several times a month.  This past month alone, we went ice skating, bowling, and even explored a fascinating museum exhibit. Whether it's hitting the amusement park or catching a movie, there's always an exciting trip on the horizon!  These trips are a fantastic way to explore the city, bond with classmates, and create lasting memories.

Overall, Discovery High School has provided me with a well-rounded education that's not just about memorizing facts. It's about having fun, making friends, and discovering who I am.  I'm so grateful to be part of such a vibrant and supportive community!

Discovery High School: My New Home Away from Home

Coming to America in July 2023 as an immigrant student from the Philippines was a daunting experience. The cultural differences between the busy streets of New York City and my small rural hometown were vast. However, Discovery High School made my transition unexpectedly smooth and welcoming.

Discovery High School boasts a diverse student body, with classmates from all corners of the globe. There, I even met Dwayne Dumas, another Filipino student from my very own hometown! This incredible diversity fosters inclusivity within the school, ensuring no student feels isolated regardless of origin, race, or culture.

DHS offers a lot of extracurricular activities that are better than what I found in other Bronx public schools. Within months, I was actively participating in three clubs: Student Council, Coordinators of Student Activities, and the Principal Advisory Council. These organizations provided a platform for me to explore my interests and develop leadership skills – skills I initially feared I might lose or struggle to apply in this new environment.

Supportive Staff and Inspiring Mentors

Discovery High School is where I encountered some of the most incredible teachers and staff members I could have asked for. My US History teacher, Mr. Allen, stands out as one of the most supportive and open-minded individuals I've ever met. His guidance not only helped me grasp US History, but also gave me the confidence to take on the AP and Regents exams without fear of failure. Mr. Schoenstein, Mr. Hurdle, and Principal Rivera are all highly professional individuals who I aspire to emulate. They've guided me beyond the confines of textbooks, leaving a lasting impact with their words and insights. Even though I'm not particularly athletic, Mr. Donovan, the best coach I've ever had, transformed my volleyball skills within a year, surpassing the level of varsity players in other schools.

A Home Away from Home

Through its diverse student body, exceptional extracurricular activities, and genuine faculty and staff, Discovery High School truly made me feel at home. I am incredibly grateful for the positive impact it has had on my life.

As a student here, I can state with confidence that Discovery School is more than simply a place to learn; it's a great community that makes you feel at home.  Both the teachers and staff are amazing!  Every student feels appreciated and supported at this school because of its friendly and open culture.  

Students can explore what they are interested in and acquire life skills like leadership and cooperation by joining one of the many clubs and internships that the school offers.

In addition, there are lots of day school and after-school activities, and lunch gatherings that offer chances for making friends outside of the classroom.  So even though the school focuses a lot on academics, it’s  also enjoyable to be in school.  I’m so appreciative of being a part of such a kind and inspiring community!
